Sick of stale spaces? Suffering from all-white farmhouse fatigue? Then you’ll love the latest trend: In interior design, warm, earthy tones are edging out white and gray.
It wasn’t so long ago that brown, in shades ranging from beige to copper to chestnut to chocolate, was a neutral of choice for interiors. No doubt your mom or grandma decorated with rich colors of the brown family.
“So tired of gray,” Julie Holloway of Milk and Honey Home tells CountryLiving.com. “I hate to say brown is the new black but I think it is.”
Holloway isn’t alone. Quite a few of our readers have noted a similar dissatisfaction with the all-white, minimalistic homes that have taken over Pinterest in recent years. But trends are cyclical, and now, we’re seeing homeowners embracing earthier shades and a more maximalist style — both of which can either cozy up more modern interiors or enhance historic woodwork of older homes. Basically, brown is a win-win — and anything but basic. While we’re not suggesting a total return to the heavy wood paneling and shag carpet of the ’70s, some natural touches and warm hues here and there would be nice, don’t you think?
Here, these beautiful rooms are proof that brown is making a comeback.
